How to Understand Your Online Business Presence — And Enhance It
Before a potential customer even contacts your business, they've already formed an impression based on what they find online. Let's ensure that first impression is compelling.
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
Imagine this: A potential client hears your business name mentioned at a gathering. Curious, they pick up their device while dessert is being served. In those fleeting moments, long before dialing or visiting your establishment, they've crafted an opinion. That impression is shaped entirely by what they find online.
A critical misstep many entrepreneurs make is overlooking the fact that your digital footprint serves as your initial handshake with potential customers. It’s your velvet rope, your storefront window, your introductory nod. Understanding how you appear online is vital, and this process is essential in my evaluations for clients at Fix Your Search. It all kicks off well before I ever meet anyone in person.
1. Start with Your AI Search Overview
Your journey begins with this key step, as it represents the way customers initiate their research. Enter your business name into Google and examine the AI-generated summary that pops up at the top of the page. This concise snapshot aggregates information from various web sources to outline your business in just a few sentences. Evaluate it thoroughly. Does it reflect reality? Is it positive? Does it truly represent you?
In my practice, I seek inconsistencies — outdated contact details, incorrect services, or even details mistakenly attributed to competitors with similar names. Many sift past this overview without a second glance, so if it misrepresents you, you'll lose their interest immediately. My primary goal is to enhance this portrayal, ensuring accurate and genuine information reflects who you are.
2. Look Up Your Name in the News
Next, check the news section on Google. Input your name along with the term “news” and see what appears under the news tab. What will you find? A positive local highlight can foster immediate trust, while an unfavorable story, perhaps even an older one, could linger on the first page for years.
What I instruct my clients often surprises them: when the search reveals nothing, that silence can send a message too. A non-existent presence suggests that no one finds you noteworthy enough to mention. In today's competitive market, that's a significant oversight. I aid clients in determining whether they have a narrative worth sharing, and if they lack one, we craft a compelling story for them.
3. Analyze Your Reviews Objectively
Don’t settle for a glance at your overall rating. Instead, spend time reading through each review as if you're encountering your business for the first time. Pay special attention to how you respond.
When I conduct this exercise for clients, their responses reveal much. Businesses that warmly reply to positive feedback and deftly manage criticism indicate a strong understanding of customer expectations. In contrast, entities that ignore feedback or respond defensively send a different signal. Patterns emerge as well: if multiple reviewers mention slow service or highlight the same staff member positively, that’s more than just noise — that’s valuable data.
Try evaluating your last 20 reviews consecutively. What collective story do they narrate?
4. Explore Discussions About You on Social Platforms
This part is often overlooked, yet critical: investigate discussions on platforms like Reddit, Facebook groups, and community forums. Here, you’ll find a raw, unfiltered look at what people are saying without pretext.
During these searches for my clients, I uncover both hidden gems and lurking issues. Sometimes, a glowing recommendation surfaces that the owner wasn’t aware of. Other times, there exist posts filled with complaints echoed by other frustrated customers. You can't sculpt a reputation you can't see, so my work revolves around pinpointing where your business is being mentioned.
5. Revamp Your Google Business Profile
Now we focus on the workhorse of your online presence: the Google Business Profile. Analyze it with fresh eyes. Is it claimed and verified? Is your business category selected accurately? Are contact details up-to-date and functional? Do your photos radiate authenticity and warmth?
It's astonishing how often this fundamental aspect is neglected. I have clients lose inquiries for extended periods due to an overlooked incorrect phone number. And visuals matter far more than people realize. A profile adorned with bright, inviting images of your space and team will significantly outperform a generic placeholder image. This adjustment is inexpensive, requiring only a bit of attention, yet it’s often the most impactful change I make.
6. Ensure Consistency Across All Listings
Lastly, assume the role of detective across the web. Scrutinize your Google details against images from your website, Yelp page, Facebook profile, and any other directories where you appear. Your mission is consistency.
During audits, I often discover discrepancies like snagged hours or conflicting phone numbers. Here's why that matters: Google favors businesses with cohesive information, quietly penalizing those with inconsistencies. Confounding contact details can frustrate customers while also affecting your search rankings. Although tedious, this work is foundational to everything else that follows.
Your First Impression Is Already Set
Long before anyone books or walks through your door, they've encountered an aspect of you online. A chaotic or contradictory presence can suggest that the experience inside might mirror that disorganization. In contrast, a polished and accurate online image signals that you pay attention to detail and care about customer experience.
This promise is everything. It's what I aim to help every client achieve. So, conduct that search today. Look yourself up through the lens of a curious stranger, and be honest with what you find.
